MWC Shanghai Observation: 6G and Satellite Internet Scale Network Deployment Cost Reduction

MWC Shanghai Observation: 6G and Satellite Internet Scale Network Deployment Cost Reduction

Recently, MWC Shanghai 2026 opened as scheduled. Unlike the enthusiastic atmosphere of last year when 5G-A commercial orders were intensively landing, this year's exhibition halls exude a cautious pragmatism: the first-ever standalone "6G Industrial Ecosystem Zone" and the "Future Constellation" satellite area drew strong crowds, but industry players are more eager to calculate "when technology turns into real money."

Blue Whale Technology reporters found that in the 6G direction, there is no dispute over the three major paths of communication-sensing integration, AI-native, and space-ground integration; chip makers have even started pre-research stocking early. In the satellite internet field, the "land grab" for orbital slots and frequencies has basically ended, with scale network deployment and cost reduction becoming the new theme. However, consensus stops at the technology level—terminal manufacturers and investment institutions are generally standing still, the former waiting for killer applications and the latter unable to calculate return cycles. Even international satellite players that have achieved profitability struggle with early-stage civilian market cultivation.

With 5G investment accounts not yet fully settled, 6G and satellite internet are collectively entering a transition period of "clear vision but difficult execution." Technology paths are narrowing, but commercial exits look increasingly broad. Under real investment return constraints, the industry needs a more pragmatic answer than "grand narratives."

6G Technology Paths Converge, Business Closure Still Under Exploration

Entering the 6G Industrial Ecosystem Zone at MWC Shanghai's N3 hall, five sections—Beijing 6G Lab Overall Area, Communication Enhancement, Communication-Sensing Integration, Communication-Computing-Intelligence Integration, and Space-Ground Integration—clearly present 6G's core technology vision. On-site staff told Blue Whale Technology reporter that this is the first time MWC Shanghai has set up a standalone hall for 6G, sending a clear signal: 6G has moved from concept discussion to a critical stage of system verification.

"If last year everyone was debating what 6G should do, this year the debate is about how to do it and what trade-offs to make," said a technician from Beijing 6G Lab Overall Area. Currently, the three enhancement paths of communication-sensing integration, AI-native, and space-ground integration have basically formed industry consensus, and key technologies like terahertz communication and intelligent reflective surfaces are entering prototype verification.

The upstream layout pace is clearly accelerating. At this exhibition, Qualcomm demonstrated an end-to-end 6G prototype system; GalaxySpace publicly exhibited its self-developed second-generation direct-to-cell phased array antenna for the first time in the 6G ecosystem zone; vivo exhibited its 6G pre-research prototype and technology roadmap. It is understood that unlike Xiaomi focusing on underlying transmission algorithms and OPPO on communication paradigm innovation, vivo's demonstration leans more towards end-to-end systems and application deployment—its complete 6G test system includes MR terminals, 6G terminal prototype (UE), 6G base station (RAN), and core network, covering the full chain.

The on-site representative of a domestic chipmaker told reporters that the company's internal 6G pre-research team has doubled in size compared to last year. The logic is clear: "Waiting until standards are frozen to start is too late; technology reserves must be built in advance."

However, compared to upstream enthusiasm, terminal makers are more cautious. Blue Whale Technology reporters asked multiple mobile phone brands at the 6G zone about their 6G terminal plans, receiving responses mostly like "closely monitoring," and few consumer-grade product demonstrations were seen. A 6G pre-research director from one of the world's top five phone makers said in informal communication that a clear 6G phone commercial roadmap is still difficult, not due to lack of technical capability, but because the path from user demand and use cases to conversion remains under assessment. In his view, 5G's experience dividend has not been fully released, and 6G's envisioned immersive holographic, multi-sensory scenarios still have a distance from mass consumer markets.

Investors are also cautious. A TMT-focused early-stage investor encountered at the exhibition after viewing multiple demos at the 6G zone said the technology is impressive in direction, but from an investment perspective, 5G capital returns are still in digestion, and the scale of 6G R&D and network deployment investment is huge, with exit cycles and return expectations currently lacking sufficient data support. He admitted that at this stage, it's more about tracking and observing; the time to act requires clearer commercial signals.

"Future Constellation": Pattern Set, Profit Path Yet to Validate

Unlike the 6G zone's focus on key technology verification, the first-ever "Future Constellation" satellite industry zone presents a different industrial rhythm: the orbital pattern has taken initial shape, and participants are entering a phase of resource and cost refinement.

Domestic LEO broadband and narrowband constellation operators such as Geospace, Guodian Gaoke, and Yuanxin Satellite, along with international player Iridium, all built sizable booths. Geospace showcased real LEO satellite internet terminal equipment for oceangoing ships and desert mining areas; Guodian Gaoke promoted the Tianqi constellation's IoT deployment cases; Yuanxin engineers even made live video calls over the "Qianfan Constellation."

"The battle for satellite internet orbital slots and frequency resources has concluded. The current focus is on scale deployment and cost control," said a representative from Guodian Gaoke. He disclosed that the batch production cost of the company's narrowband communication payloads is steadily decreasing, but also noted that satellite internet service user scale has not yet reached breakeven; for at least the next few years, government and industry orders remain the revenue base.

In the process of profit model formation, terminal cost is a notable link. Blue Whale Technology reporters discussed satellite communication terminal material costs at antenna and module manufacturer booths, with respondents generally saying costs are rapidly declining and capable of being integrated into mainstream phone designs. However, most manufacturers did not disclose specific figures.

A business manager at the Iridium booth said that Iridium has achieved positive cash flow through narrowband voice and low-speed data services, but the traditional market is nearly saturated, and next growth requires expansion into IoT and emergency communications. Meanwhile, domestic LEO broadband constellations are still in a scale-priority catch-up phase, and breakeven will take time and user accumulation.
